We love large windows in our home, allowing morning or afternoon sunlight to pour into our living spaces. It makes for a much warmer home, emotionally and physically. Here in South Georgia, though, natural light can become quite intense. This is when light- and heat-blocking shades and draperies are the answer.

Why motorized shades?

We chose motorized shades for our home to manage solar gain (heat from the sun), help us reduce our energy usage, and protect our furniture from discoloration and fading due to sun exposure. And, because our motorized shades are automated, we don’t have to remember to open and close them every day.

The knowledgeable folks at H&H Lifestyles set us up with a control and automation system, integrating the shades into our whole house system. We can open and close the shades (draperies, too!) with our phone or from the keypad in the house. This system also enables us to turn off/on the lights, set the thermostat, and arm/disarm the security system. The H&H technician gave us thorough training in how to manage all of this!

Motorization options are available for a wide variety of window treatments. H&H Lifestyles has a broad selection of beautiful fabrics and colors to enhance any décor. Because the lift function can be motorized on draperies and shades, you’ll avoid dangling cords, which makes having motorized window treatments a safer choice for our grandkids’ visits.

Shade Options

Although we chose shades only, not draperies, we learned that a motorized shade and a drapery track can be combined for the same window, allowing varying levels of filtration for different situations. A dual roller shade (our favorite) can also accomplish this, using one roller for a blackout shade and the other for a sheer shade with the desired level of light filtration. The treatments can be automated based on time of day, occupancy, or sunlight levels. Ours rise slowly in the mornings so that the light wakes us up gradually, giving us a glorious view of the marsh, then slowly lower as the sun sets, accurately tracked for every season by an astronomic clock.

These shades also help with our home security. Steve and I like to travel, so there are large blocks of time when we’re not home. Automated motorized shades make it seem like someone is home, even when we’re thousands of miles away. This works especially well when coupled with our automated lighting.

H&H Service

For our installation, H&H Lifestyles custom-designed a version of their proprietary user interface to give us the simplest possible means of controlling our motorized shades, music and media systems, lighting, HVAC, pool, sprinklers, energy monitoring, and more. Many manufacturers of these systems have controls that are an unsightly addition to the décor. H&H installed these controls out of sight in our home and incorporated their functionality onto a single touchscreen, reducing wall clutter and adding convenience.
